Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I've heard about VoIP but don't understand what kind of equipment I need in order to use it. What do I need?

A: VoIP does require a high speed (broadband) Internet access connection in order to be possible. DSL or cable services will work just fine.

Specific equipment will vary on the VoIP service provider. Some don't require anything more than that you have a headset combo or desktop microphone. Other companies have special adapters which connect to your high speed modem and enable you to use your regular telephone.

Q: Why should I or my company consider using VoIP? How will it help mobile professionals?

A: VoIP can work on any computer with broadband Internet access. It is less expensive for long distance calls than traditional phone plans. With some VoIP plans you can choose your own area code, so that it makes it cheaper while traveling. You can have other numbers and even email routed to your VoIP account. Most VoIP plans offer additional programs or applications that would cost you extra with traditional phone packages. These include conference calling, 3-way calling, voice email and voice fax.

Q: Can I use my cell phone as if it were an office extension?

A: Yes. The cell phone will have all the functionality of your office phones.

Your cell phone is considered a Remote Extension. First configure the remote extension by telling the switch what your cell phone number is, and the three digit extension number you will use to refer to it (numbers 201, 202, ..., 208).

Now the cell phone acts exactly like an office extension, this means:

  • People in the office can ring your extension to reach your cell phone.
  • Your receptionist can manually transfer incoming office calls to your cell phone.
  • The auto attendant can forward calls to you.
  • The call cascade sequence of a local extension can go to your cell phone.
  • Call screening works at your cell phone, so you can reject calls and have them transferred back to the office or to your office voicemail.

Q: How do customers purchase minutes from raitelecom?

A: Our customers include switch-based carriers and consumer VoIP service providers that terminate their international calls over the raitelecom network.

Carriers connect via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or using Internet circuits at one of our Internet Central Offices (ICOs) in New York, Bangkok or Laos. The ICOs digitize and compress voice calls and then pass the calls through gateways and across the raitelecom network. Our overseas partners receive, regroup and convert the calls back into analog voice/fax for local transmission.

Q: How does raitelecom differ from other Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs)?

A: raitelecom specializes in VoIP traffic between the US and Thailand. The company has built a robust network between the two countries and that delivers very high quality voice calls. raitelecom's customers receive all of the economic benefits of IP telephony without having to change their operations or lower their call quality standards.

Q: What about the quality of Internet telephony or VoIP?

A: Delivering high quality of service while using the Internet for international transport of voice traffic is no longer a challenge. Improvements in VoIP technology and raitelecom's robust network has allowed for the highest level of voice quality and call completion. VoIP technology automatically selects the best route for every call based on network performance data collected in real time, and routes calls around points of congestion in the Internet to assure the highest quality service. As a result raitelecom's call completion rates equal to or higher than industry averages as reported by many of the leading international Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) carriers.
